In my artwork ‘East Meets West, Bosphorus Bridge’ is the essence of my experience during an Erasmus exchange to Turkey comes to life. The title of the work refers not only to the directly to the Bosphorus Bridge in Turkey, a symbolic union of east and west, but also my personal process.
The bridge is literally a bridge between cultures, it is where the Christian culture meets the Islamic cultures and melts together. For me personally the work stands for melting the two cultures together within me.
On the left, shades of gray dominate, representing the European side of the city. Here the imposing buildings of Taksim Square rise up and stretch into the clouds. These monochromatic colors represent the modernity and business side of the western part of the city.
On the right side, on the other hand, vibrant colors bring the eastern side of Istanbul to life. The fish market, port and colorful residential areas are reflected in a palette of vibrant hues. These colors capture the vibrancy and diversity of the eastern part of the city, where tradition and community life flourish.
The white line running around all over the object represents the bridge, with the two vertical lines as bridge pillars rising from the water. The line connects the physical gap between east and west.
